The truth will set you free

Zoe’s hands are tied when the cops arrest her son Brandon stabbing his classmate.

-

Usually, investigative journalist Zoe Phillips (Schelaine Bennett) puts the bad guys in jail. But the tables turn on Wednesday 31 January when the cops want to question her teen son Brandon (Donovan Pieterson), who was suspended on Tuesday 30 January after stabbing a classmate. “Zoe is in panic mode,” says Schelaine. “She tries to hide her son but this time no amount of money or connections can save him from the trouble he’s in with the law.” Zoe moved in with her business entrepreneur dad Michael ( Terence Bridgett) in December 2017 to give Brandon “a normal life”, but now she realises that it wasn’t a good idea to remove him from his old life. “Brandon is autistic and Zoe has hid this from the world. She thought that sending Brandon to a ‘regular’ school would help him adjust comfortably in society. It’s done more harm than good and he could face hard time for her misjudgement,” adds the actress. Unless Zoe is willing to reveal the secret about his autism…

JUDGEMENT DAY

And it gets worse on Thursday 1 Febru- ary when the police arrive to arrest Brandon. “Like all moms, Zoe is defensive and protective. She shouts at the cops that is was never his intention to hurt anyone and that he was provoked,” says Schelaine. The police brush Zoe aside and haul Brandon off to the police station, leaving Zoe to try pull strings and have the charges dropped. “She believes she’s responsible for Brandon’s behaviour. Zoe thinks that she should have listened to him when he told her that he doesn’t fit in at his new school,” adds that actress. “She spent more time convincing Brandon that the school isn’t ‘so bad’, but now she will have to scramble to save him.”

OUT OF CONTROL

Zoe decides to keep Brandon’s autism a secret, thinking that people will treat him differently when they find out. But disclosing his disability could be the last resort at helping him escape jail, says Schelaine. “Zoe loves Brandon and she wants the best for him.” Her world falls apart by Wednesday 7 February when she’s told that he’s being sent to a juvenile detention centre due to his unruly behaviour. “Revealing his autism is the only way to have his lucky break,” says the actress. But to keep Brandon out of jail and the courtroom, Zoe will have to trust the police, the same people she knows inside-out from her work…
