Building up the house
Tina Redman and Metanoia Ngubo go head-to-head helping their teams renovate, redesign and rebuild their homes in the second season of Reno Race.
Season 2 Wednesdays (from 7 February) SABC1 (*191) 18:00
Reality renovation show Reno Race (2017- current) returns and it’s got co-hosts Metanoia Ngubo and Tina Redman counting down the clock again as neighbours and friends compete against each other in a 48-hour décor do-over in their own homes. The contestants will again be divided into two teams – blue and red – and the hosts will guide them along the way as they hammer, screw, paint and plaster their way to their dream rooms. “Tina and I are competitive,” jokes Metanoia. “It’s funny because the contestants never have tension. Instead, the drama is between the two of us!” jokes Metanoia. With thousands of entries sent in for season 1, the hosts are looking forward to new contestants and new DIY fun. “This is going to be exciting! Once you’ve ridden a bicycle, you can take the training wheels off – we’re looking forward to giving our expert advice to help our teams create amazing rooms,” adds Metanoia.
WE ARE FAMILY
The design race kick-starts as soon as the sun rises – the production crew are set up and ready to film by 06:00 and the presenters familiarise themselves with the teams over a cup of coffee and breakfast. “It’s an experience like no other. The cameras are rolling 30 minutes after we get there and we start running,” says Metanoia. And there is a lot of running around involved while filming each episode, but it’s part of the job. “The show is fast-faced, so we shoot the intro with the families physically running into their homes. We also run into their houses to check out the work we need to do. We run in and out of shops to buy materials. The crew is run throughout the day between the homes to film the progression as we take out the old and bring in the new.”
LIGHTBULB MOMENT
Joining the excitement of winning an episode is fun, but it isn’t the sole reason that the hosts enjoy being part of Reno Race. “Shooting an episode is exhausting for the whole team,” says Metanoia. “But while we finish covered in dust, sweat and paint, it’s worth it. The contestants leave the show with smiles on their faces, which makes what we do even more fun.” For co-host Tina, it’s the pressure that comes with renovating a room in 48 hours that keeps her on her feet and focused. “Our team is passionate about helping the contestants. They are determined to complete each project to the best of their ability. The beautiful thing for us is that it’s always a win for both teams as their homes have been renovated with love from our contractors and, of course, us,” adds Tina.
