Stumbo Stomp

-

Five pantsula crews dance off every week for a R20 000 cash prize on reality show Stumbo Stomp (2011-current), plus the bragging rights back home. With presenter Busiswa Gqulu still on maternity leave after giving birth in early January this year, dancer and musician DJ Buckz (real name Obakeng Ramahali) is ready to take over for season 5. “Busiswa and I are close friends and she told me to audition while she’s on leave. I’m excited and can’t wait to get shaking on the dancefloor!” laughs Buckz.

Was it scary swapping your DJ decks for hosting a reality dance show? Of course! [Laughs] It’s a totally different world to what I am used to, so I am equally excited as I am nervous. But the show is a mixture of dancing and music, the two things that I enjoy doing. Did your friend Busiswa give you any tips while she’s away? She told me to just be myself. We have the same personality: outgoing and vibey. I’m glad that the producers see what she saw in me and it is an honour to continue with the work that she has been doing. So what is a day of filming Stumbo Stomp like? Hectic but a lot of fun. The people behind the scenes make my job easier by keeping me into the loop. It doesn’t feel like work when you’re having fun and you know what’s going on. Have you learnt anything surprising? Too much! Television isn’t as easy as it looks. There is so much admin that goes into putting a show together. And have you pinched any new moves from the dancers to use in your own routines? Not yet. [Laughs] I’ve been dancing for years, so if anything, I’ve left moves for them to steal instead. [Laughs]
