Newbie lawyer Josh Segal (Nicholas D’Agosto) has his hands full in dark-comedy Trial & Error (2017-current) with his murder-accused, poetry professor client Larry Henderson (John Lithgow). This isn’t the first time that John has played an absent-minded, unreliable and eccentric character – his role as alien military leader Dick Solomon in 3rd Rock From The Sun (19962001) made him a household name.
The 72-year-old’s career started 1
long before 1996 though – he was drug dealer “John” in 1972 drama film Dealing: Or The Berkeley-To-Boston Forty-Brick Lost-Bag Blues
Becoming an actor was no acci2
dent, although John admits, “I’d grown up doing a huge amount of acting in my dad’s plays. I wanted to be a painter or printmaker.” His dad Arthur was a theatre director and producer, while his mom Sarah was an actress.
Besides acting, John uses writing 3
and music as other creative outlets. In 1999 he released kiddies album Singin’ In The Bathtub, and he’s written children’s books like Marsupial Sue Presents The Runaway Pancake (2005) and I Got Two Dogs (2008).
A busy career doesn’t mean John 4
hasn’t made time for a home life. He divorced Jean Taynton in 1980 after 15 years of marriage and son Ian (45), who played loser Leon in 3rd Rock. John wed history professor Mary Yeager in 1981 and they have two kids: daughter Phoebe (35) and son Nathan (34).
John voiced Jedi master Yoda in 5
1983 for radio adaptations of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return Of The Jedi (1983) ,and in Yoda styling admits, “Fun was it!”
