It isn’t just conspiracy theories and alien plots that have kept audiences coming back for 25 years of The X-Files (1993current). FBI Agents Dana Scully and Fox Mulder (Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny) “are the X-Files”, says creator Chris Carter. But that UFO ride is coming to an end this season, because Gillian will be quitting when filming wraps…
Was it easy to “find” Scully again after 15 years [season 9 aired in 2001]? The interesting challenge for season 10 [in 2016] was how to make the same character show up as a 50-something because she has mannerisms that wouldn’t be appropriate for her age, like she rolled her eyes a lot. [Laughs] You’ve made no secret that you’re finished after the current season. I’ve done it for so long and it’s been an extraordinary journey with an extraordinary character that I have been lucky to play. It is time. We’re delivering 10 strong episodes and I feel like it’s ending on a high. There is some more stuff that I want to do too. The X-Files isn’t just aliens and little green men, is it? Not at all. There are sci-fi episodes, mythology ones and a couple of comedy storylines. They’re always fun to do, the comedy ones, because they aren’t just funny, they’re clever too. Did you expect the success of your partnership with David as Agent Mulder? I knew nothing when I started – TV was an entirely new world. I feel like my relationship to Scully and, in turn, Fox changed every year. Trawling back over episodes, I have a completely different and new perspective – I understand what they [Scully and Mulder] mean for viewers. It’s a unique and special dynamic. People always ask “what about your chemistry?” and for me, to be in this duo is a very special thing indeed.
