Sphola isn’t the only character on Skeem Saam who’s had a bad time with booze. Good-guy varsity student Jama (Oros Mampofu) died on his 20th birthday from alcohol poisoning at a party in July 2016, and naive varsity student Eunice (Oratile Maitisa) was rushed to hospital in early March 2018 when she drank a bottle of vodka after her boyfriend Emkay (Mlungisi Mathe) broke up with her and she couldn’t handle it.
