Once Upon A Time is more than just fairytales come to life – it’s filled with Disney royalty too!

-

TV is where imagination comes to life. Thanks to internet streaming service Showmax, you’re smack in the middle of fairytales with fantasy series Once Upon A Time (2011- current; seasons 1-5 are available on Showmax to stream, download and binge-watch). “This show is as if every fairytale character you know and love is real and they exist in this town called Storybrooke,” laughs Jennifer Morrison, who plays bail bondswoman Emma Swan. “These characters have been cursed and part of the curse is that they don’t know who they are.” Inbetween the “regular” fairytale characters, you’ll also spot princesses in your binge-watch schedule who’ve been made famous by Disney, like…

ARIEL

From 1989 animated film The Little Mermaid A mermaid in a forest setting? Nothing’s out of question for Once Upon A Time and Ariel (Joanna Garcia) saves Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) from drowning after she leaps off a cliff in season 3 episode 6. Ariel is searching for a man named Eric (Gil McKinney), having been in love with him since saving him a year before. And since Snow White knows a thing or two about love at first sight, she agrees to help Ariel find her “one true love” during the only 12 hours a year that mermaids can walk on land.

RAPUNZEL

From 2010 animation movie Tangled (see p40) Like the original fairytale, Rapunzel (Alexandra Metz) is locked in a tower in Once Upon A Time season 3 episode 14. She’s hiding from her destiny as the future queen and spots Prince Charming (Josh Dallas) down below. But he’s not alone down there – a dark spirit is following him up Rapunzel’s brunette rope hair as he climbs up to her…

BELLE

From 1991 animation Beauty And The Beast Sweet, innocent Belle (Emilie de Ravin) is nothing more than a slave in season 1 episode 12. She was forced into the service of fairytale trickster Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle) in exchange for him protecting her town, only to fall in love with him. But just when Rumple and Belle feel like everything in their strange love is falling into place, The Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla) sticks her nose in their business and tears the beauty and her beast apart.

ELSA

From 2013’s Frozen The princess with power over snow and ice (Elsa is played by Georgina Haig) pops up in Once Upon A Time season 3 episode 22 searching for clues to her kingand-queen parents’ whereabouts. She ends up trapped in an urn that’s locked in Rumplestiltskin’s vault, but expect a blizzard to descend upon Storybrooke in season 4 when Elsa is freed, turning the town into a chilly place to be.

MERIDA

From 2012’s Brave The bow-slinging redhead (Amy Manson) arrives in season 5 episode 1 to rescue Storybrooke’s saviour Emma, who has been consumed by darkness. The only way for Emma to survive is to find the wizard Merlin (Elliot Knight) in Camelot. Cue Merida protecting Emma on her trip – Robin Hood’s got nothing on this sharp-shooter!
