The Mabasos are divided during matriarch Nandi’s (Brenda Mhlongo) coma condition after being shot in the hospital hostage drama on Monday 23 April. Angry villager Peter ( Tseko Monaheng) pulled the trigger to get revenge on Nandi’s son-inlaw Mazwi (Musa Ngema) for his wife’s death offscreen. Now Nandi’s kids Sphe (Pearl Monama) and Fana (Duma Mnqobi) believe that it’s Nandi’s shady businessman Jack’s ( Vusi Kunene) fault hat Peter is a widower after giving orders to forcibly remove villagers from their homes in January 2018 to make way for his land development project. “Usually, Nandi is the glue for this family,” says Brenda. “They can’t stand each other but they have to be there for Nandi as she fights for her life,” adds the actress. But with Nandi in an unconscious state, her family will have to work together to help her recover – which will be tricky as they persist in playing the blame game.

READ ALL ABOUT IT

Because the hostage drama was in a public place and Mazwi brought the police, the shooting makes frontpage news on Wednesday 25 April. In addition to his family’s backlash, Jack is furious about being the talk of town and “he is hard on himself. Jack loves Nandi and he wants her to get better, but everyone is attacking him for the shooting,” explains Brenda. Although Jack admits that his decision to move the villagers was wrong, he has always shielded Nandi from harm’s way, like when she had a mental breakdown in 2016 and he kept it private. “The family are hoping for the best. They want to see Nandi back to her old self, especially Jack,” sighs Brenda.

THE WAITING GAME

Like Jack, doctor Sphe is struggling to keep it together. She didn’t think that hiring her nurse mom at the hospital would end in a dramatic shootout and “the women grew close. Sphe relies on Nandi for emotional support and she hates that she can’t fix her mom,” explains Brenda. The family don’t have to wait long for a recovery – Nandi opens her eyes on Monday 7 May, much to everyone’s relief. “Her family are over the moon – especially Sphe, who is at her mom’s side! She’s just happy to have her pillar of strength back, but at the same time Sphe is still irritated with Jack for putting their family through this mess,” warns Brenda. When Nandi is around, the family pretend to be on good terms with each other but Fana and Sphe continue to scold Jack and Brenda hints that “the shooting doesn’t bring them closer. They are all torn apart from the thought of almost losing Nandi.” And it won’t get easier anytime soon. In fact, the more time that passes, the more the Mabaso family are going to be torn apart – and Nandi may wish she was still unconscious to not see this.
