Koketso Mophuting is adamant that her good-natured character Kaone has never behaved like this before. “No, never – it is not how she was raised. She was taught that you do not take things that aren’t yours. Stealing is not the right way to live.” Thing is, the last couple of months have been hard on her, even more so when Beauty Ngwenya (Thuli Thabethe) and her mom Lillian (Linda Sebezo) moved in.” So why try to fix things now? Simple, admits Koketso: “She is guilt ridden. She is the consumate goody-goody-two shoes. This time, she has broken her ‘mould’. It starts off as a once- off thing because it’s out of character for her. I can only hope that she isn’t going to make it a part of who she is,” says the actress.

HELP ME!

In her attempt to repent, Kaone turns to Jabu (Pallance Dladla) for guidance and help. “She works for him [as a housekeeper] and she’s closer in age to Jabu than to anyone else in the household. It only makes sense to speak to who she feels comfortable with.” And it’s not just the comfort part that Kaone needs help with. Jabu is all too well aware of what happens when you cross someone like Beauty. He was married to her daughter Zama (Linda Mtoba) before Zama was killed in a wedding shootout at the end of February. Koketso isn’t sure what the outcome is going to be for her character, given how unpredictable Beauty is, but “at this point, I’d like to think that it’s about salvaging her conscience. As for telling Beauty that first, she stole from her and her mom, and now that Beauty must accept her word that she’s put everything back in its place… hmmm… I’m not sure she’s that brave! [Laughs]”

BECOMING A THIEF

As for preparing for the role, Koketso says that her character literally doesn’t think it through, so there was no need to do any work. “It’s impulsive. It’s a case of, ‘Oh well, here’s money. What can I do with it? Besides these people – more Beauty’s mom Lillian than anyone else – are treating me badly.’ I’m going to say that in the heat of the moment, there’s a lack of remorse.” Thing is, the best thieves are the ones who don’t get caught. They can lie through their teeth without breaking a sweat. Kaone isn’t like that. “It’s written all over her face,” says Koketso. “Nobody is perfect and that is important to remember. Everyone makes mistakes. You can’t work in a cane-field and not taste the sugar. But I’m glad she is going through this because it opens her to imperfect, more relatable storylines in the future.” The last time we checked though, sugar wouldn’t point a gun at your head like Beauty Ngwenya…
