A hit & a miss
Pearl’s traumatic kidnapping leads to her knocking on love’s door with the new guy in town Mzi.

David Genaro (Jamie Bartlett) is a notorious Joburg gangster dedicated to his life of illegal deals, but this smooth criminal is also devoted to his kids Pearl and Quinton (Petronella Tshuma and Cidjey Thivillon). The usually in- control David is in a frenzy on Wednesday 9 May when Pearl doesn’t answer his calls or show up at her apartment. “Pearl has been kidnapped by David’s business rivals Musa (Thabiso Mokhethi) and Robert (Kabomo Vilakazi) to blackmail him into keeping Musa’s dodgy sex and drug operation from the police,” says the actress. Musa drugs Pearl and leaves her for dead on the side of the road on Thursday 10 May. “Because of the drugs, Pearl is in and out of consciousness and the next moment she knows, Mzi (Jesse Sunele) is rushing her to hospital. Her family are called and that’s the last she sees of Mzi before she blacks out,” says Petronella. When David sees the state of his daughter, he immediately paints target on Musa’s back.
OUT OF VIEW
David confronts Musa on Monday 14 May and strangles him to death. “His children are his world and he would do anything to protect them,” says Petronella. While Musa is dead and out of the way, singer Reneilwe (Amo Chidi) is fixated on exposing the illegal business that he ran from club Zero11 in March. Renei wants her justice from Musa for kidnapping both her and Pearl. “He mistreated them but now everyone can rest easier knowing that he’s no longer around,” she adds.
IN THE DARK
To get over her kidnapping and celebrate Reneilwe’s new song Masquerade, Pearl hosts a massive party at club Zero11 on Tuesday 22 May. And to keep to the theme, guests have to wear masks. “Mzi and Pearl are drawn to each other. He asks Pearl to remove her mask and lo and behold, she’s the girl that he rescued and has been searching for,” says Petronella. But before Mzi can reveal himself, the fire alarm goes off. “She doesn’t remember his face but she would’ve loved to see who he is. Joburg is a smallish city [Laughs] – the will cross paths again,” teases the actress.
