Insecure

Season 2 Tuesdays (from 15 May) Vuzu (*116) 22:00

Series creator Issa Rae says that her character Issa Dee is in a whole new world in season 2 of dramedy show Insecure (2016- current). “She hasn’t been in the dating scene for the last five years. She was in what she hoped was her last relationship.” Although she’s swiping left [choosing potential dates on smartphone apps like Tinder] and going out with online suitors, the only thing on Issa’s mind is her ex-boyfriend Lawrence (Jay Ellis). “But he wants nothing to do with her, so it’s difficult for her to get on with her life,” says Issa Rae, whose character cheated on Lawrence with her ex-love

Daniel (Y’lan Noel) during season 1. “Issa is vulnerable after the break-up,” explains the show creator. “She wants him back but now is the time for her to figure out who she is first. That is this season’s theme.”

MOVING ON

While Issa is trying to deal with life, Lawrence isn’t wasting any time in that regard. He takes some time bumming it on his friend Chad’s (Neil Brown Jr) couch and spends weekends with his “sort of” new girlfriend Tasha (Dominique Perry). But he is secretly having a tough time getting over Issa, explains Jay. “He shuts up and gets on with it. He needs to learn to talk about things. Keeping it bottled up is a bad idea. He actually sabotages his romance with Tasha before it really starts. Until he stops beating himself up about Issa, he won’t really move on.”

SISTERHOOD & SOLIDARITY

One thing keeping Issa distracted from her man issues is her lawyer best friend

Molly ( Yvonne Orji). Their bond is part fiction and part based on Issa and Yvonne’s friendships in real life. “Whenever there is a crisis for Issa, Molly is happy to be there. They’re on a journey of self- discovery together,” explains Issa Rae. “I have been on that my-self. And while guys – and Lawrence – will come and go in her life, Molly is always around for Issa. She has been there from the beginning.”
