American Woman
Season 1 Fridays (from 31 August) M-Net (*101) 22:00
Bonnie Nolan is losing everything in comedy American Woman (2018current) and she is clueless about it, says Alicia Silverstone (Cher in 1995 comedy movie Clueless). “Bonnie is a homemaker in ’70s Los Angeles, where her husband Steve (James Tupper) has been working as an estate agent while Bonnie raises their daughters and lives the housewife life.” By working, Alicia means that Steve has a sidepiece who’s keeping him burning the midnight oil when he should be at home with his family. “Bonnie’s world comes crashing down in episode 1 and she is forced to grow up after she finds out that Steve is cheating on her and that he’s under investigation for fraud,” reveals Alicia. “She is told to get a job and for the first time as an adult, she is afraid and lost.” But joining the workforce isn’t Bonnie’s only obstacle…
NOSY NEIGHBOURS
Being in the wealthy wives club is a problem when you’re not a wife, nor are you wealthy. Without Steve’s cash, Bonnie is forced to take the only job available to someone whose sole skill is being a housewife: working at a boutique where her friends will see her.
ADULTING
When Bonnie was married, Steve took care of everything. All the bills were paid – school fees, parties, jewellery… she worried about nothing. That makes it all the funnier when Bonnie gets her first paycheck and asks why money has been taken off. It’s called tax, hun…
GROWING PAINS
Bonnie faces something scarier than the cops though: angsty teen
Becca (Makenna James), who doesn’t just rebel, she blames her mom for her dad’s cheating and leaving them. And that’s as terrifying as a teenager throwing a tantrum.
GAL PALS
Even Bonnie’s two besties add drama to her life. Wannabe casting agent Kathleen’s (Mena Suvari) business partner boyfriend is gay and taking her for a ride, and Diana (Jennifer Bartels) deals with her overbearing mom and being overlooked at work by sleeping around.
