Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) might think that he’s the hottest cop on the block, but Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s (2013- current) finest is inarguably Sergeant Terry Jeffords (Terry Crews). “The best thing about Terry Jeffords is that he is me. Terry loves yogurt, I love yogurt. Terry loves his family, I love my family. He loves his co-workers, I love my co-workers,” says Terry C. “I get to reveal a lot about me. I am a nerd. That is what I am. I am an artist. I will tell them stories and three episodes later, it’s in the episode. That is really cool.” But Sergeant Jeffords wasn’t always this magnificent. “When we did the pilot, the first day we were filming, my character was supposed to be very mousy and very just quiet,” reveals Terry C. “And all of a sudden, I got a call the night before we filmed for the first time and they were like, ‘Terry, we made a mistake. We need you to be you. You’re not mousy, you are aggressive.’ I felt so great that they made that move. You don’t know what Terry is going to do, you really don’t. He could collapse in a heap and cry, or he could really hurt you.” Sergeant Jeffords has layers like his delicious mango yoghurt parfait. And those layers are made up of all the things that Terry loves…
TERRY LOVES…
In episode 12 (18 Nov), we’ll see what Terry is like when he kicks back on holiday. As he lies on a sofa in his most comfortable clothes, Terry announces, “This weekend, I am Vacation Terry. No kids. No responsibilities. I’m just a balloon floating in the great blue sky and I am untethered. Vacation Terry is no man’s boss. When the slippers are filled, Terry is chilled. I’m playing Kwazy Cupcakes, I’m hydrated as hell and I’m listening to Sheryl Crow. I’ve got my own party going on. I am prepared for any vacation situation. I’ve got a bottle opener, sunscreen, inflatable neck pillow….” Lead us into your cosy wonderland, Terry.
Fitness
In season 1 episode 7, Terry revealed that he’d even found himself working out in his sleep. “I ended up doing 25 minutes of sleep chin-ups of muscle memory alone. Tired Terry still gets after it. That’s all I’m saying,” he announced proudly. And it pays off. In episode 6 (7 Oct) this season, Terry asks Jake, “You want me to flex and make all the buttons pop off of my shirt?” only to admit that “the challenge is keeping the buttons on”.
