Madi (Zethu Dlomo) may start this final season of pirate drama Black Sails (2014-2017) whispering sweet nothings into the ear of Silver (Luke Arnold), but it isn’t long before the queen of the Maroon Islanders finds herself in bed – on a business- only basis – with Silver’s best frenemy Flint (Toby Stephens) following Silver’s disappearance in episode 1 (on 15 August). “There are a lot of ups and downs and confusion because this is a world without technology in that you can’t exactly tweet that you are alive. So there’s a bit of, ‘Ah, she’s dead. No, she’s alive!’ And ‘Ah, he’s dead. No, he’ alive!’ Because they don’t know what’s happening or where the other is in this war, their relationship gets tested,” says Zethu.
SILVER vs FLINT
“Madi and Flint’s relationship gets tighter the minute that Silver is not around. There’s this connection that they have, like, ‘Oh no, the love of our lives are gone,’ and they comfort each other over losing Silver. By the time that Silver comes back into the picture [episode 3 on Wednesday 29 August], the dynamics between Flint and Madi have changed. You make a decision and whoever comes in later kind of walks into whatever you guys have decided to do and that is what happens with Silver,” says the actress. “And there’s a reversal coming, because the way that Madi was with Silver in episode 1, when she warned him against trusting, will happen to Madi but with Flint warning her not to trust Silver!”
HEAD OR HEART?
Madi’s alliances will continue to shift subtly throughout the season, reveals Zethu: “Madi has to do what she has to do in the moment, as the moments pass. She could go from princess to prisoner – which she does.” Despite the heart-warming reunion in episode 3, Madi will be asked to make a shattering decision between Silver, her people and responsibilities by episode 9. “Silver and Madi are soulmates. I don’t think that she was even dating someone from the village before Silver stepped up because nobody could get [understand] her – her responsibilities, the weight on her shoulders. When she connected with Silver in season 3 (2016), she found the love of her life, someone who could fight the battles with her,” says Zethu. “But to choose between your people and your man? That’s a tough decision. I think I would choose my man.”
