Marcus Mabusela has been there, done that on soaps, featuring on everything from Generations (2014- current) to 7de Laan (2000- current). For his latest reincarnation though, he is a lot more serious as fossil expert Khumalo in cop drama The Docket (2018- current). “He is an intriguing character and I’ve had a lot of fun building him,” says Marcus.

What research did you do into archaeology or are you just reading what’s on the script? It’s very important to do your research. My cousin works as an archaeologist in London and conversations with her concerning the profession helped in understanding and building Khumalo. Are you upset that he isn’t waving a gun and getting involved with The Ravens’ case? He played an important role in uncovering the stolen fossils. He isn’t a violent man, but he was right in the middle of the investigation. Khumalo wants to be a law-abiding citizen but he’s working for a crime syndicate – do they have some kind of hold over him? His conscience got the better of him and he chose to betray the syndicate to help the police bust them. I believe that his intentions are good though. What else are you involved in at the moment? I am currently shooting a feature film called Valhalla with Hlubi Mboya-Arnold (Inspector Ntsiki in The Docket). What’s the biggest difference between soaps and a series? With a series, there is more flexibility in delivering your character, freedom to give dimensions to your character. Soapies tend to be more one dimensional. And what are your plans for the future? I want to produce and I will be going to the New York Film Academy in 2019.
