Every family has a black sheep and for Commander Steve McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin) in Hawaii Five- 0 (2010- current), that is his little sister Mary Ann (Taryn Manning). Getting into trouble is something that the 40-year- old is all too familiar with: she was arrested in 2012 and 2016 for assaulting her personal assistant, which ended with a restraining order filed against her.

She revealed in an interview for prison drama Orange Is The New Black (2013- current, she plays Tiffany) that she’s an alcoholic. “I’m not ashamed. I’ve accepted that it is okay to not be okay,” she said, adding that a sober companion was always close by. Taryn did karate as a teen in Arizona after getting into fights at school. She was state champion within three years and has a green belt. She almost quit acting after being fired from a movie in 2001 before it even started filming. “It was a tough lesson but I was a brat. I put my heart into music and ignored acting, but my love for it pulled me back,” she adds. Her part-time jobs in high school included making coffee at bistros, waitressing and working for famous ice cream brand Baskin-Robbins. She confessed in an interview that she’d often have little spoonfuls of ice cream, joking that she was simply doing “quality checks to determine freshness”. In Jan 2018, she threw a tantrum after finding out that her dress for the Screen Actors Guild Awards was a $200 (R2 800) dress that anyone could buy and not exclusive like she thought. Taryn has one requirement when taking a job: that her characters don’t commit suicide. Her father took his life when she was 14.
