Devious Maids
Season 4 e.tv (*194) 22:00 Drama
Evelyn Powell is devilishly wonderful as the worst madam to work for on fun drama series Devious Maids (2013-2016) and Rebecca Wisocky says that it’s that evilness that makes her character such a fan favourite: “I foresaw how much everyone would love this character because they are tragically beautiful, losing a young child and developing into these raging out- of- control villains who live in the mansion next door. It is pure genius from our writing team. You are literally loving to hate the Powells.”
Cruel, cold, callous Evelyn isn’t a once- off character for the 47-yearold, who says that “in theatre, you don’t get stronger leads that Lady Macbeth, which is why I’ve never said no to playing her, whether it’s on Broadway or in a little town play out in the sticks”. Rebecca always planned to be an actress but made sure she had an education first. She studied acting at the Pennsylvania Governor’s School For The Arts and earned her Bachelors Degree from the New York University Experimental Theater Wing in 1993. She splits her time between Los Angeles and New York but not for her work – her husband Lap Chi Chu is a Broadway theatre lighting designer who also moves between LA and NYC. Rebecca isn’t a big drinker but she does have a favourite when she’s out on the town – a bourbon Manhattan. At home it’s a lot simpler: whiskey on the rocks. Weekly yoga sessions give her the body for her other indulgence: sugary butter cookies that Rebecca says she can eat “all day, every day”. And for guilty TV treats, she’s a huge fan of adult cartoon series South Park (1997- current).
