Polygamy pitfalls & Sibonelo’s disrespect Actress Thuthuka tackles the love triangle troubles that should pull the brakes on Nonka’s wedding plans

Despite the warning signs, Nonka blindly agrees to get into a polygamous marriage with Sibonelo.

Salon assistant Nonka (Thuthuka Mthembu) always dreamt of her wedding proposal being something out of a bridal magazine. Nothing too fancy though. She’d be at a restaurant with her gangster boyfriend Sibonelo (Wiseman Ncube) with music playing in the background. He’d get down on one knee and ask those four words: will you marry me? She’d blissfully agree and live happily ever after.

“But fairytale romances don’t exist in the world of Uzalo,” says Thuthuka whose character is still reeling from Sibonelo’s recent proposal. He asked Nonka as well as his other girlfriend Siphilile (Nomthandazo Tee Xaba) to marry him at the same time because he wants two wives. He doesn’t really care whether they agree with polygamy or not. “Nonka doesn’t want to share her a man, but with a little convincing from Sibonelo she agrees because she loves him that much,” adds Thuthuka. With Siphilile also saying yes, it’s time to plan a double wedding. But not if Nonka’s family has a say…

THROWN OFF BALANCE

Nonka can’t stand to be in the same room as her future sister-wife without side- eyeing her or throwing shade. If it’s this bad now, before their weddings, imagine how complicated their polygamous life will get? “The thing about Nonka is that she thinks too little of Siphilile to even care about her,” says Thuthuka.

As far as the women are concerned, they’re not entering the marriage to become besties, but to spend their lives with this man they both love so much. Little do they know that the type of marriage they are agreeing to isn’t just about them and the man, but all parties involved. “Nonka doesn’t feel the need to talk to Siphilile or interact with her. They’re trying to stay out of each other’s way. It’s extremely awkward between them,” adds Thuthuka.

A DISASTER WAITING TO HAPPEN

Considering that the women were both against the polygamous union, their fiancé should’ve respected their decision. Instead, he manipulated them into entering a life-long commitment they’re all clueless about. “It’s taboo for young couples to be polygamous. What is worse is Nonka just finished matric last year. The last thing she needs is a complicated marriage,” says Thuthuka.

Despite her family’s protests, Nonka has made up her mind: she is walking down the aisle. “Nonka is blinded by love and refuses to listen,” explains Thuthuka. There is one person who can still stop it: her brother

Njeza (Nkanyiso Makhanya) who is planning to refuse Sibonelo’s lobola money.

And their drama begins…
