Sets play a huge part in TV shows and while some series fake locations using computer special effects, NCIS: New Orleans (2014-now) does it au naturel – they really do film in the city of New Orleans, Louisiana. “We could’ve probably filmed in Los Angeles and used a lot of editing to look like this city, but we had the facilities, the crew and most importantly, the budget and permission from New Orleans city council to shoot here,” explains lead star Scott Bakula (Agent Pride). Here’s more location info you didn’t know until now…
The Squad Room headquarters isn’t as tech centric as mothershow NCIS (2003-now). Instead, it’s got oldschool barn doors, street lamps and exposed brickwork to resemble New Orleans’ French Quarter neighbourhood, which was established in 1718 by French settlers. “We built this set to match the flavour of the suburb, it’s this wonderful old and new mix,” explains executive producer Kim Hayman. Despite being fully functioning – with running water – the kitchen set is used sparingly, says set designer Vicky Paul. “It’s not like the characters will sit and chat about a mission over coffee. I sometimes have coffee there between takes, but don’t tell anyone!” The characters’ homes and all of the NCIS: New Orleans sets sit sideby-side in a warehouse soundstage but unlike the other NCIS shows, network CBS has closed it off to fan tours.
And when the actors walk upstairs to the interrogation room, it really is upstairs, says Vicky. “We built the second floor because the soundstage is high. Set stairs often lead nowhere.”
