SAF3 (pronounced Safe, 2013-2014) feels a little like Baywatch (1989-2001) because it’s from the same creators.

The action show follows the Sea, Air and Fire (SAF) divisions of the Malibu Fire Department in Southern California but it was filmed entirely in Cape Town, with Camps Bay, Hout Bay and Simon’s Town doubling for Malibu. “The producers scouted across the world and it was a unanimous decision to film in South Africa,” says creator Greg Bonann. “It really paid off, and Cape Town is the perfect double for California’s coasts.” Keep an eye out for these characters…

SAF3 team captain John Eriksson is played by Dolph Lundgren (Ivan Drago in Rocky IV, 1985). It wasn’t the Swedish actor’s first time working in SA – he was here in 1988 to shoot action film Red Scorpion (as Lieutenant Niko Rachenko) and 1998 to play action hero Christian Erickson in movie Sweepers. Ex Navy SEAL and SAF3 boss Hal Dunnigan is played by South African acting vet Patrick Lyster, who specialised in stage and theatre. He played Captain Hornigold in Black Sails (2014-2017), also shot in CT. Ex- Olympic swimmer and chopper pilot Jared Taylor is played by SA star Karl Thaning (Father Dylan in The Girl From St Agnes, 2019, and O’Malley in Black Sails). Ironically, Jared never has to swim.

Chief Gallagher is played by local actor Andre Jacobs, who portrayed De Groot in Black Sails, as well as Andre in Die Byl (2016-2019).
