The inemptitude of Space Force’s crew is genius.

Name: Lucia Poolman

Position: Editor hiding biscuits under my bed so that I alone can eat them.

I am watching: Space Force (2020) season 1 on Netflix.

My take on this show: I expected a slapstick comedy, and although there is definitely laugh-out-loud moments, it has a serious undertone. The talented Steve Carell plays almost-ignorant General Mark Naird, the newly appointed Chief of Space Operations of the freshly formed Space Force – a task team with one goal in mind: to be the first in the world to have “boots on the moon” by 2024. While Mark knows nothing about space, he is a likeable hero. It almost borders on satire with social commentary as they accelerate a long-term project to be ready to launch immediately.

My favourite moment so far: just Google the Kokomo-scene in episode 1 where Mark takes a breather to compose himself and breaks out in a dance. Try not to laugh, I dare you!

Why I am watching it now: I couldn’t wait for the show to start and binged it as soon as I had the chance (it started on Friday 29 May).

Familiar faces: most notably Steve, best known as Michael Scott in The Office US (20052013). John Malkovich with his droning voice is perfect as Dr Mallory (Sir John Brannox in The New Pope, 2019-2020). And it’s a treat to see Lisa Kudrow (Phoebe in Friends, 19942004) as Mark’s wife Maggie.
