Life is a joke for Abbi (left) and Ilana.
Name: Kashief Achmat Position: scheduler who’s ready to sell one of his kidneys for a PS5. I am watching: Broad City (2014) season 1-5 on Blue Ray boxset.
My take on this show: when I was introduced to Broad City, I was told it’s about these two 20-something best friends Abbi (Abbi Jacobson) and Ilana (Ilana Glazer) who navigate life in
New York City. It seemed very typical, but as you watch, you get warped down into a world of hilarious antics dashed with splashes of feminism and surreal comedy. Abbi is insecure, trying to make it as a trainer at a gym, but also works as a cleaner while her true passion lies in art. She tries to grow into herself and does more so thanks to the help of her over-the-top bubbly best friend Ilana.
My favourite moment so far: in season 2 we meet Ilana’s mom, played to perfection by Susie Essman. Them trying to buy knock-off handbags will never not be funny to me.
Why I am watching it now: I recently got into a Facebook fight with someone who said there wasn’t any women comedy shows and I went into essay fight mode telling them off for that.
Familiar faces: there are a good couple of comedians who make appearances before they blew up, like Hannibal Burress from 30 Rock (Hobo Man, 2010-2012) as Ilana’s dentist boyfriend, and Alia Shawkat, Maeby in Arrested Development (2003-2019) shows up for a fling with Ilana.
