A kidney for her heart
It’s back to square one when Mbali changes her mind and rekindles her romance with Sibusiso to save her life.
The last thing that businessman Sibusiso (Ntando Mncube) expects is a call from Durban Gen Hospital informing him that his fiancée Mbali (Nelisiwe Sibiya) has been admitted. Sibusiso doesn’t know that surgical intern Mbali recently eloped with her colleague Lindelani (Mike Ndlangamandla) and as she was going to recite her vows, Mbali collapsed and she wakes up in the emergency room this fortnight fighting for her life. “Sibusiso is so dazed that he doesn’t even notice that Mbali is still in her wedding gown. All he cares about is her health, which seems to be deteriorating by the minute,” explains Ntando.
Mbali is diagnosed with kidney failure and she needs an organ transplant or she will die. “The battle for Mbali’s heart begins,” explains Ntando, whose character offers one of his kidneys to save his fiancée. Not to be outdone, Lindelani offers his kidney too…
KIDNEY CONFUSION
Initially, Mbali plans to turn down Sibusiso’s offer. Her conscience won’t allow her to accept his kidney because she was just about to marry Lindelani. “The reality is that Mbali has fallen out of love with Sibusiso,” explains Ntando. Mbali thought that she could fight her feelings for Lindelani, but she landed in bed with him in early January and instead of dumping Sibusiso, she fell deeper for Lindelani. But the more she thinks about it, the more confused she gets. “She can’t help but re-evaluate her decision to leave Sibusiso after his offer. It’s the ultimate romantic gesture,” says Ntando. Mbali starts avoiding Lindelani at the hospital, too scared now to tell him that she’s going back to Sibusiso and they’re going to get married after her life-saving surgery.
MAY THE BEST MAN WIN
Lindelani wants nothing more than to be Mbali’s knight in shining armour, but after a little more careful thought, he stands down in the battle of the kidneys. “He realises that he has a young daughter and if Lwandle (Lizwi Zenani Ndumo) has kidney problems down the line, then he won’t be able to save his daughter’s life,” says Mike. But while Mbali’s instinct is to choose the man who’s willing to offer her his kidney – even though she has fallen out of love with Sibusiso – that doesn’t mean Lindelani is going to throw in the towel. “He’ll continue trying to prove that he’s better for Mbali, even after she chooses Sibusiso. Lindelani has an ace up his sleeve that he thinks will guarantee him marrying Mbali rather than his rival. They’d better hurry up though – Mbali needs that surgery.
