Driving Miss Ivy

Marvin is stunned when his wife Ivy reminds him that she isn’t licensed to drive – but he’s not teaching her either.

-

Before arriving in Hillside in 2019, Marvin and Ivy (Duncan Johnson and Nazli George) lived in a small one-horse town “and it wasn’t a progressive place. Women stayed at home and men did everything. So Ivy never had to get a driver’s licence because she had no need for one,” says Duncan. But that’s a problem that they’ve put at the back of their mind since moving up to the fictional Joburg suburb. “Marvin is mortified when he realises that she’s been driving – and transporting their young twins Vee and Eddie (Zoey Volkwyn and El-Kody Langeveldt) – illegally,” adds the actor. That’s a problem for Marvin, but it’s one that he can fix – if he’s allowed to.

STEERING THE FAMILY

Duncan reminds fans that his character, as an ex-cop, is by the books and a stickler for obeying the law. “Marvin is the kind of man who sticks to rules. He is responsible and he sets an example for his family and friends. He is trying to teach his twins the difference between right and wrong. And what Ivy is doing is wrong,” says the actor. This fortnight, he insists that Ivy get official driving lessons and gets licence after she runs into trouble while taking Vee and Eddie on a little adventure. “Marvin insists that his wife does this by the rules, getting lessons although she can physically drive,” says Duncan, adding that his character won’t be teaching Ivy himself. “Ivy is emotional and she operates with her heart before her head. That makes it difficult, frustrating even, because she is stubborn. Their son Romeo (Clint Aplon) also isn’t willing to help teach Ivy to drive. It’s a case of ‘I can’t put up with her stubbornness’ for both of the men.”

WOMAN OF THE HOUSE

There’s a reason for Marvin stepping back and letting someone else teach Ivy to drive. “She is the centre of the house. If Ivy isn’t happy, no one is happy. And Marvin wants to keep his wife happy. Now that they are living in ‘the big city’, Ivy is doing a lot of running around in the car and Marvin wants her to feel comfortable and safe and secure. So he is going to make sure that she gets the lessons she needs to get her licence,” explains Duncan. Marvin and Romeo do slip in the odd bits of advice, but they’re also careful “not to overwhelm Ivy. She may think that she knows best when her hubby and son are involved, but help from the outside is needed sometimes as Ivy goes on her journey.”

24 – 26 FEBRUARY

Ivy is furious when she sees how Romeo and Marvin mock Shawn, and Rickus is upset with Chris when he learns that Chris cancelled their plans. Eddie and Vee ask their mom Ivy to take them on an outing, and Fikani has to deliver news to a patient but he isn’t sure how to get the message across. Elsewhere, there’s tension in the air between Ivy and Marvin.

1 – 5 MARCH

Vince thinks back to the deli’s glory days, Ivy and Marvin count their blessings, and the guys decide to protect Hillside from a threat. Lesedi surprises Vanessa in a bad way, Bonita is worried when she meets an emotional and upset Denzil. Shawn is depressed that his dating life is at a standstill, but Lana encourages him to give it another go, and Ivy thinks that she’s found her guardian angel. Connie travels to Tzaneen to visit André in prison and surprise him with a special gift, and Denzil has hearts fluttering around Hillside. Shawn later is touched when he hears about his businessman dad DeWet’s charity work.

8 – 9 MARCH
