Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Qiniso Van Damme is on a quest to find love and her happily-ever-after in season 1 of reality show The Bachelorette SA (2021-now). When she isn’t handing out roses, Qiniso is on dinner dates or wild outdoor rendezvous, trying to narrow down her search for “the one”. But COVID-19 presented challenges…

Filming was initially delayed by the nationwide lockdown, but producers had to ensure the lead, her suitors and the team were safe by using strict protocols. “We were tested routinely and in isolation for 10 days before filming,” says executive producer Donald Clarke. “We isolated in a ‘bubble’ so that the chances of infection and the virus spreading were minimised.”

Just like on every other production around the world, the crew wear masks, sanitise almost hourly and also maintain social distancing – but there’s one slight difference: The Bachelorette SA group are remaining in the bubble until the season wraps. “It wasn’t an option to expose anyone [to COVID-19] and there was a mandatory isolation period before entering the bubble,” explains Donald. “If by chance, one of the crew members tested positive while at the hotel, they would remain there and we will arrange treatment for them.”

The set has been closed off to outsiders too – including tvplus. “Qiniso’s dates take place at the mansion where the men are staying, specially isolated locations or at the hotel where Qiniso and the production team stay. “We’ll leave the bubble once Qiniso chooses her final four – we have a special finale planned at one of the most exclusive destinations in SA,” adds Donald.
