Hair-raising return
GC and Thobile’s return to KwaMashu involves a hairstyling competition filled with drama, hairdos and missing money.
The hair competition is more than just a contest for Nosipho (Nompilo Maphumulo). She’s hoping that it will put KwaNjomane hair salon back on the map as KwaMashu’s best spot for styles, ’dos and hot gossip. The red carpet has been rolled out, the judges have arrived and there’s a strong smell of hairspray in the air. It’s not the intricate hairstyles that will turn heads – instead, Uzalo fans are going to be spoilt when GC (Khaya Dladla) and Thobile (Nokuthula Mabika) sashay their way into the spotlight. “The pair needed a reason to stay in KwaMashu after they finished with the late April surprise wedding for MaNgocbo (Dawn Thandeka King,” says Khaya, who left the soapie in 2019. “They enter the competition with the excuse that they’re just there to create attention and get the contest on the tip of people’s tongues, but deep down the pair know that they are in need of the prize money to maintain their flashy lifestyles,” adds Khaya.
FLAIR… BUT FAILING
Thobile and GC are infamous in KwaMashu for being extra everything. Back in the day the duo ran the KwaNjomane salon and were part of the Glam Squad. “Everyone at the contest is gossiping and wants to see what flamboyant GC and Thobile create. The expectation is that they will win the competition by a landslide,” says Khaya. “But they’re up against tough opponents. They never expected it to be this tough. Fikile (Nelisa Mchunu) and the other girls from the salon bring their A-game.”
When they realise that they’re trailing the competition, things start falling apart. “The truth is that they left for Joburg when things weren’t going well for them. When they got the opportunity to come back to KwaMashu from the big city, they lied about the lives they were living,” says Nokuthula. In that moment, the pair hatch a devious plan while the judges are deliberating.
HAIR TODAY, GONE TOMORROW
“It was GC’s idea to take the money. No one would suspect that they’d need it after they told everyone about their new lives. Thobile was against the idea but she agreed to steal the cash because they really need it,” explains Nokuthula. Khaya elaborates that “they’re in debt. They even had to borrow petrol money to get to KwaMashu. They need to pay a lot of people back.” Thing is, KwaMashu is full of crooks and it’s won’t be long before someone starts sniffing around and realises what the pair got up to. The question now is whether they’ll be able to buy their way out of trouble or face the long arm of the law…
