Tenda trouble

Nobody threatens Tenda’s idea of a fairytale life and gets away with it – not even family.

-

Tendamudzimu (Nat Ramabulana) has money, power, the mansion and the tailored suit. But there is one thing that he’s always struggled to scheme together: the perfect woman by his side and kids to round off the family. But after fighting tooth and nail to steal Mpho (Azwimbavhi Rambuda) from Chief Azwindini (Gabriel Temudzani), Tenda has everything he’s always wanted. And there’s a baby on the way too. But there’s a problem brewing and it’s closer than Tenda realises: his out of control nephew Hulisani (Burnett Gededger) is gambling again.

“Their relationship is complicated, as Tenda has felt responsible for his twin brother Tshamano’s son Huli,” explains Nat. “Tshamano (played by Nat) went to prison for a crime Tenda committed and Tshamano murdered Azwindini’s son before dying in 2019.” Hulisani has been able to guilt-trip Tenda into giving him whatever he wants. “There are dark emotions because Hulisani blames his uncle for the death of his father and all that has happened,” says Burnett.

THE DEBT IS DONE

This feeling of guilt and responsibility has put Tenda in a tight spot one too many times as he’s rescued his troublemaker nephew. “From money to get married, to paying his gambling debts, ‘rich uncle Tenda’ always provides for Hulisani,” says Burnett. But even Tenda has his limits, and saying no to Hulisani, who has started gambling – and losing again – kickstarts an explosive situation for the men. “Hulisani has never had to deal with a Tenda that says no and he returns a few days later armed and desperate,” explains Burnett. If Tenda doesn’t pay up, Huli threatens to shoot Mpho. “Hulisani thought he would just push his uncle to do what he wants and guilt-trip him like he has always done,” says Burnett. But Hulisani doesn’t get the reaction that he’d expected and Tenda flies into a rage at the sight of a traumatised Mpho with a gun pointed at her belly with Tenda’s child inside.

HE WENT TOO FAR

Hulisani threatening Mpho is what pushes Tenda over the edge, explains Nat. “Tenda is protecting what he has worked so hard for. He has struggled with women, they always betrayed him and the idea of Mpho being threatened flips a switch.” While Tenda is beating his nephew, raging emotions take over and he is immediately remorseful when he realises what he has done. Whether he’ll be able to hide the evidence is one thing, but the emotional strain could make even tough Tenda crack…
