Mother mission
Nosipho wants a baby and she doesn’t need a man to do it.
Gone are the days where women would have to be in a relationship or married to have kids. In the age of technology, artificial insemination helps single women fall pregnant, and Nosipho (Nompilo Maphumulo) not only gets curious about this medical process, she seriously considers it after overhearing Lilly (Noxolo Mathula) and Amahle’s (Hope Mbhele) conversation that it’s available at a local fertility clinic. “Nosipho is an independent businesswoman and she doesn’t care about having a man in her life. But what she does want more than anything is a family. She works hard and wants to have an heir who will inherit everything and carry on the Gxabhashe name,” Nompilo says.
AT ANY COST!
In 2016, Nosipho fell pregnant with her ex Ayanda’s (Kay Sibiya) child but wasn’t ready for a child, so she had an abortion. But now she wants to be a mother more than ever. “She’s got so much love to give, and she wants to give it to her own child,” Nompilo says. “So out of the blue, Nosipho has a onenight stand with Detective Mondli (Thembinkosi Thwala). When he leaves, she finds the condom with his sperm and keeps the sample in her fridge,” Nompilo giggles. “Throughout all of this, Nosipho is in communication with Amahle, who is a nurse, about artificial insemination. She then takes it to a fertility clinic to have it inseminated in her,” adds the actress.
PUTTING ON A BRAVE FACE
Nosipho owns a business hub and she needs to be hands on even if she does fall pregnant. “For Youth Day, Nosipho organises a day for her tenants and their plus-ones to have a fun game day, just to keep them happy. She’s a smart entrepreneur, she does this to make sure she doesn’t lose any tenants,” says Nompilo, clearly proud of her character who will need money for the insemination procedure that won’t be cheap. But she has something else on her mind…
Nosipho’s desperation to be a mother has pushed her to taking a man’s sperm without his knowledge, without anyone’s knowledge, in fact. But soon her burning secret gnaws at her! “It’s awkward when she bumps into Mondli because she knows what she’s done. Plus, Amahle also starts asking her too many questions about all her enquiries about artificial insemination,” Nosipho says. She’s always trying to be a better woman, so Nosipho starts going to church “and you know how it goes at church, there’s always confession time and Nosipho may want to get her secret off her chest,” Nompilo teases.
