A protected environment

- Dave Pullin

The finding of snares and the remains of a snared bushbuck ram on Beacon Hill highlights a serious problem not easily resolved. The illegal hunting was not in the Beacon Hill Protected Environment but on private land on the slopes of Beacon Hill.

The Beacon Hill grasslands are a proclaimed, protected environment managed by the landowner, the municipality, eZemvelo and Friends of Beacon Hill. The plant diversity is unique with some extremely rare and endangered plants. Smaller mammals and some game are present and there is free movement of game between the grasslands and where poaching is taking place. The snaring is of great concern.

As with any conservation area there are problems apart from illegal hunting. Beacon

Hill has plant theft, not just for muti but also by others for their gardens; some people leave bottles and litter and damage a particularly sensitive grassland area; motorcyclists ride on the face of the hill, causing erosion. Some dog lovers ignore the signs, letting dogs off the lead. Finally, there is the control of alien vegetation, complicated by illegal garden refuse dumping.

This gem needs the co-operation of the community to protect and preserve it. If you are interested in becoming involved in any way contact Dave Pullin, chairman, Friends of Beacon Hill on 072 692 1566. -
