The Midlands Rose Society recently hosted their Spring Rose Show at Blackwood’s Garden Centre at The Avenue’s in Hilton.

With the event advertised on social media, both members of the Society and members of the public entered their best roses for the competition.

Gail Birss, chairperson of the Society, said: “It was very encouraging to see so many of our younger members entering for the first time and then walking away with the best results.

“The Queen of the Show was Kate Wallace with the rose ‘Forever Delight’. She also was awarded with the most points on show.

“The First Princess was Louise Jennings with a lovely rose called ‘Hot Cocoa’ and the Second Princess was Shoshanna Jackson with the rose, ‘Rina Hugo’.

“There were 198 entries at the show and some members travelled from Mooi River and Richmond to enter the competition.”

The event was hosted over two days at Blackwood’s, attracting many visitors, who admired the display.

“We hope to make the Spring Rose Show an annual event,” said Birss.

At the weekend, the Society took part in the Harcourts Open Gardens. Its Heritage Rose Garden, which was established in 2017 at the Garlington Estate in Hilton, was open to the public to view.

“Despite the wet and bitterly cold weather, many people visited the garden, which was in full flush and really looking beautiful,” said Birss.

The Midlands Rose Society is the largest Rose Society in South Africa, and members are spread throughout Kwazulu-natal with some as far as Gauteng and the Cape.

“There are many advantages belonging to a Rose Society, besides receiving a monthly newsletter with tips and advice, members receive many rose related products at great discount prices,” said Birss.
