MARITZBURG COLLEGE’S TOP MATRIC ACHIEVERS
On the evening of Thursday, October 12, the class of 2023 ceased to be College boys and became College Old Boys as they were formally inducted into the Maritzburg College Old Boys’ Association.
Valedictorian of the Class of 2023, Luc du Toit, delivered a heart-warming address which focused on highlights of the past year and on their shared five-years of brotherhood.
On Friday, October 13, the school hosted its annual Speech Day and Valedictory Service recognising outstanding academic achievements by its sixth formers.
In his address, College’s headmaster, Chris Luman, spoke about the true meaning of success, and what it means to be successful.
The guest of honour was Wilhelm de Wet, a talented sportsman and top academic in his schooling years, and currently an actuary and founder of the actuarial recruitment business, SA3. He shared the inspirational story of the Jakes Gerwel Technical School and Bonnievale – a community-drive education solution, that has not only transformed the local community but has given hope to countless other communities across South Africa.
In addition to the various subject prizes, a number of special prizes were awarded. The Dux for 2023, Declan Pillay, received
the FNB Prize and the Levinsohn Trophy for the Dux of Maritzburg College, as well as a merit certificate, the Epoch Optima prize for further studies in mathematics, the PWC prize for accounting and the prizes for Afrikaans and physical science.
Second in sixth form was Tayughe Ramdhass, who was awarded the Nedbank Proxime Accessit prize as well as a merit certificate, the Olley prize for history and English, and the prize for English.
Matthew van Rooyen received the Colenbrander Accountants prize for third in form, as well as a merit certificate and the prize for business studies.
Among the top prize winners were outgoing head prefect, Sasha Kadira, who received the Phelps-cannon Prize for service to the school, and deputy head prefect, Thaseem Ganie, who was awarded the Nora Cook Trophy for altruistic service.
Senior deputy head prefect, Luc du Toit, received the Maritzburg College Old Boys’ Association prize for service to the school, as well as a merit certificate, the Kickstart prize for visual arts, the Charles Taylor Award for good fellowship, the prize for achievement in academics and sport, and the Mike Brown Five Pillars Award.
Ross Froise was awarded a merit certificate, the PKF Trophy for economics, and the prize for achievement in academics and culture.
