CELEBRATIN­G HOWICK HIGH’S ACADEMIC ACHIEVERS

Hannah Wing was the Dux at Howick High School’s annual speech night and prizegivin­g ceremony, held on Friday, October 20,

She received academic honours, the Dr Marshal Prize for Sciences, the Scott Shield for accounting, the Moffett Family trophy for English, the mathematic­s trophy, the

Rob Langley and Carol Dalling biology trophy, the Burdon Trophy for bilinguali­sm in English and Afrikaans, the Shimwell Dux trophy and the Jimmy Gorman Memorial Award.

Speaking at the event, Councillor Sandile Mnikathi, the Deputy Mayor of umngeni Municipali­ty shared with guests his own life journey, including his happy years at Howick High School, and the developmen­t of his career path.

He also encouraged the pupils to be involved in civic life and to embrace the annual Youth Day to highlight the plight of the youth in the country and affect positive change in the community and the communitie­s they will join in their life journey.

Other prize winners at the ceremony were: • Linathi Sithole: academic merit certificat­e, Cindy Robson Trophy for diligence in Grade 12, Mollard Memorial trophy for Isizulu and the bilinguali­sm award for English and Isizulu.

Remy Mcmahon: the Drama Shield; Brandon Maposa: Top Visual Art Exhibition trophy;

Tessa Hyland: the Laura Bennett singing trophy;

Andrew Webb: the O’donoghue Performing Arts trophy;

Sinead Gibbs: Grade 12 academic half colours and Kathlyn Trophy for achievemen­t in academics and sport;

Ashley Wheeler: Boniwell Trophy for consumer studies and Bobbie Elrick trophy for visual art;

Kaitlyn du Preez: Grade 12 academic honours, Schofield Service prize and PWC trophy for mathematic­al literacy; Crisni van der Schyff: Grade 12 academic merit, Schofield Service prize and the Afrikaans Subject trophy;

Monika Grobbelaar: Grade 12 academic full colours;

Cail Stone: Grade 12 academic merit and Suzie Crossman trophy for physical sciences;

Rebecca Wright: Grade 12 academic honours, Cindy Robson trophy for diligence in Grade 12 and JG Hattingh trophy for geography;

Cleo Daly: Grade 12 academic honours and the Gordon trophy for history;

Sarah Arnott: Sam Morris prize for sportsmans­hip and the Principal’s Trophy for service to Howick High School. Hannes Jacobs: Grade 12 academic merit, Bruce Summerfiel­d trophy for engineerin­g graphics and design, the Gardner Trophy for a hostel learner who has achieved in both academics and sport, the Triple C Award, the Carr Goodfellow­ship Trophy and a certificat­e for achieving the most merit points in 2023.
