Beardos raise a whopping R520 000 for charity

-

Clean-shaven and full of smiles, the Nottingham Road Beardos revealed they had raised a whopping R520 000, which is being split between the Midlands Hospice and Operation Bobbi Bear.

The money was handed over during the annual Shave Off and Auction at the Nottingham Road Hotel on Saturday.

Meghan Coslett, the marketing coordinator for Midlands Hospice, accepted the R260 000 donation on behalf of the Howick-based organisation.

She said: “Thank you to each and every person that helped reach this phenomenal amount. To the Beardos, thank you, thank you!

“It is an incredible donation for Midlands Hospice and on behalf of the board members, management and the hospice team we thank you.”

Each year, since 2017, the Beardos volunteer to grow a beard for a year to raise funds for charity.

The initiative was started by Nottingham Road’s Grevin Price as a tribute to his mother who had died after a protracted battle with cancer. Price embarked on his mission to give back to Midlands Hospice, which had been so supportive of him and his family at that difficult time, with Bobbi Bear coming on board later.

“The inclusion of Bobbi Bear made a lot of sense as we’re now able to help look after the vulnerable, both young and old,” said Price.

The campaign runs from April to April, with two annual fundraising events - the halfway Boxtrot in October and the Shave-off and Auction in April, which marks the end of the campaign and the start of a new one with another round of volunteers.

• Midlands Hospice will be holding its annual market at Hospice House, 7 Mansfield Road, Howick, from 8am to 1pm on Saturday, May 11.

Stalls will be selling food and there will be face painting, a kids area and a tea garden. Bring the kids for a bounce on the jumping castle. Inquiries: 033 330 5257.
