Canyon a forest of golden castles
CONGRATULATIONS to Joletta Frahm of Hermanus for her picture of the hoodoos of Bryce Canyon in Utah, US.
Elevation, climate, rock type and the plateau’s orientation are elements that, when combined, form unusual shapes called hoodoos. This concentration of pinnacles with odd shapes is found in the high plateaus of Colorado.
Frahm says: “It was late afternoon, the sun was setting over the hoodoos. It turned the ‘chimneys’ to gold. What a sight. It was like a forest of golden castles built in tones of chocolate browns.”
Frahm wins a meal voucher to the value of R300 at Blowfish Restaurant in Dolphin Beach, Blouberg.
The runners-up are Sue Grove of Milnerton for her picture of the cruise ships off the coast of Santorini, Greece, and Mark Fourie of Fish Hoek for his picture of a sunset over Tankwa Karoo National Park.
Grove said: “The ship liners docked for the day while passengers make their way up the steep cliffs to sightsee.”
Fourie recently visited the Karoo.
He said: “There was a massive storm on the way when the sun broke through the black clouds during the sunset over the national park. It was an unforgettable spectacle over this vast, flat, arid pan.” Competition rules: ● All photographs must relate to travel, and you may enter as many as you like.
