THE mes­sage from the Proteas dur­ing their first week in Sri Lanka has been sim­ple enough; our big stars will not be around for­ever. It is time to start cre­at­ing a suc­ces­sion plan.

Jac­ques Kal­lis’ con­tin­ued ab­sence from one-day in­ter­na­tional cricket was at first a con­cern, then be­came con­fus­ing when he was ex­pected to be on the Cham­pi­ons Tro­phy bus, be­fore pulling out for per­sonal rea­sons.

Now, it seems, the Proteas are plan­ning on mov­ing on, though no-one would dare say so, of course.
