THE message from the Proteas during their first week in Sri Lanka has been simple enough; our big stars will not be around forever. It is time to start creating a succession plan.

Jacques Kallis’ continued absence from one-day internatio­nal cricket was at first a concern, then became confusing when he was expected to be on the Champions Trophy bus, before pulling out for personal reasons.

Now, it seems, the Proteas are planning on moving on, though no-one would dare say so, of course.
