JOHNNY BOSKAK IS FEELING FUNNY: Greig Coetzee’s play won a 2015 Standard Bank Gold Ovation Award at the National Arts Festival and was a hit at the Cape Town Fringe Festival. It’s about Johnny Boskak who is “looking for love, redemption, an AK47 and the quickest way out of Secunda” and trying to find his place in the new South Africa. AN EVENING OF CHRISTOPHE­R DURANG SHORT PLAYS: Katey Carson – known for directing awardwinni­ng films and documentar­ies – makes her debut as director for the stage with this compilatio­n of Durang’s six one-act plays which is on at The Galloway Theatre at the Waterfront from Thursday (November 5) until December 6. These “catastroph­ically comedic texts” feature stories about a man at the traffic department, mourners at a funeral, a chatty old lady discussing photosynth­esis and divorcees at dinner. ITYALA LAMAWELE: The novel by Samuel Edward Krune Mqhayi has been adapted by Thando Doni for the stage and is being performed in Xhosa, at the Artscape Theatre from Wednesday until November 8 as part of the new Voices Platform. Doni is directing with Mandla Mbothwe. The story is based on the historical King Hintsa kaKhawuta and a dispute between fictional twins Wele and Babini over their deceased father’s estate and who should continue in his place. The book is prescribed for Grade 10s so it’s a great opportunit­y for them to see it. Cast features Faniswa Yisa, Bongi Mantsai, Chuma Sopotela, Babalwa Makwetu.
