Man shot dead outside Ottery Hyper

- NOLOYISO MTEMBU

A MAN was shot dead and his companion wounded during rush- hour afternoon traffic outside Ottery Hypermarket yesterday, after apparently jumping out of their car and fleeing on foot from people in a car which was chasing them.

Major traffic congestion resulted as vehicles were diverted around the body of Nolan Lindsay, a 30-year-old father of one, which lay covered in the road. His mother, Marilyn Paron, was crying uncontrollably at the scene, unable to speak about the incident.

One eyewitness said: “They were running away from a car and there was random shooting. I saw two guys jump out of the car and run. The guys in the other car shot one in the back and another man in the head.”

Lindsay was shot in the head and died at the scene.

Another witness, a taxi operator, said the area was becoming turf- war territory, with gangs from Hanover Park and Ottery fighting one another. “It is getting worse now. It happens in broad daylight and shoppers have to take cover.”

When Weekend Argus arrived on the scene, a woman who identified herself as a family friend said she’d received a phone call from a relative notifying her of the shooting.

“We do not know what really happened. The police have not told us anything.”

Police have opened investigations into murder and attempted murder.
