Catch swinging Delft Big Band at the Brass Bell

-

FOUNDED in 2008, the Delft Big Band – which adheres to the traditional big band line-up of 16 musicians and two vocalists – comprises young men and women aged 16 to 25 .

They come from one of the roughest areas on the Cape Flats, but their musical talents have been honed and nurtured into a jazz outfit that performs a repertoire of more than 300 songs in several genres, from all over the world.

Tomorrow they will be playing their first Sundowner Session on the Bikini Deck at the Brass Bell in Kalk Bay.

“The venue is spectacular. Framed on three sides by breaking waves, it can seat 200 people at tables on tiered levels, ensuring everyone has a good view of the band,” says Butch Rice, marketing director for the band.

“The acoustics are excellent. We are excited about this gig, as it is our first public foray into the Deep South, and if it goes well it will result in regular gigs at the venue.

“Even in inclement weather it will be good, as the owner has invested R1million into a huge sliding glass roof, to protect from rain if necessary.

“Our new feeder band is now in full swing, as is our new Delft Big Band Music Academy. We have had a very enthusiastic response to the academy, which will be teaching young musicians from the Cape Flats how to read music, so that they can follow in the footsteps of the current Delft Big Band. However, funding is an ongoing headache and we need a generous sponsor to ensure that we can continue.”

The band’s lead singer, Adelia Douw, recently won the Open Mic competition at GrandWest, and male singer, David October, came third.

“Kick back at the end of the weekend with a chilled glass of wine, fish and chips, a great view, and the Delft Big Band cooking away,” suggests Rice.

● The Brass Bell is at Kalk Bay station. The show begins at 5.30pm and ends at 8pm, cover charge is R60. For more information call 021 788 5455.
