Popcru stands by Phiyega

POLICE and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) said yesterday it supported suspended national police commissioner General Riah Phiyega.

“We have always supported the first female police commissioner and we will continue to do so. We have not seen the internal report made public by ( Police) Minister ( Nathi) Nhleko yet,” Popcru general secretary Nkosinathi Theledi said.

Nhleko’s reference group, established last year to probe complaints by senior managers against Phiyega, found her to have committed fraud, perjury and misconduct while in office.

On Thursday Phiyega hit back at the police ministry, saying she considered the reports “malicious and vindictive”.– ANA
