Media boss with ‘ink in his veins’ to retire

- WEEKEND ARGUS REPORTER

TONY HOWARD, Independent Media’s deputy executive chairman who has worked in the company for nearly half a century, bade farewell to his Cape Town colleagues yesterday.

Editors, friends and colleagues past and present attended a tribute luncheon at the Mount Nelson Hotel. He retires before the end of the year after 45 years in the business.

Howard started working for Independent Media, then known as the Argus Printing and Publishing Company, in 1970 as an accountant.

Over the years he worked in various posts and capacities, including financial director and chief operating officer.

He attributed much of his success to the mentors on whom he had modelled himself.

is working with the people. I was lucky to have excellent tutors who unstintingly shared their knowledge and experiences,” he said.

Executive chairman of Independent Media Dr Iqbal Survé said Howard had worked towards the development of the media industry.

“He is one of those rare people in the media industry who are genuinely committed to its growth and development. That famous saying of having ink in his veins definitely applies to him.

“Tony has been a wonderful colleague and friend, a man of great wisdom and integrity and he has embraced the change that occurred following the ownership by Sekunjalo, with acceptance and support.”

An Independent Media statement wished Howard well in his retirement and said his legacy would live on at the company. TIDES High today . .11.24am, 11.59pm Tomorrow . . .12.21am, midnight Low today . . . . .5.06am, 5.53pm Tomorrow . . . . .6.09am, 6.47pm Spring tides . . . . . . . . . . .Nov 25
