Keep it under your hat: Flavour favours Msanzi

- SAMEER NAIK

HAVING performed in 24 African countries, it’s no surprise Nigerian musician Flavour finds it difficult to choose a favourite destination on the continent.

“No matter the African country, the love and warmth from the fans is always so strong,” said the singer and songwriter, whose real name is Chinedu Okoli.

It’s clear though that the Nigerian singer has a soft spot for South Africa.

“My band and I always have such a positive experience performing live in South Africa...audiences are always so receptive and engaged in my shows and concerts from the beginning to the end.

“I always look forward to the opportunities granted for me to perform in South Africa.”

So when the star heads to the country in two weeks for the BET Experience Africa festival, he is expecting much the same reception.

The festival is a staple feature in the US and launches its first African edition at the Johannesburg TicketPro Dome with the December 12 event.

The star-studded entertainment line-up includes international artists such as award-winning superstar Mary J Blige, Maxwell, Tamar Braxton, Raphael Saadiq, Young Thug, and US house vocalist Monique Bingham.

Performing alongside them are African acts such as AKA, Diamond Platnumz, Nathi, DJ Euphonik and Black Motion.

The event will feature music, comedy, fashion, sport, dance and food.

“I’m excited to be delivering a set that will surprise a lot of fans. I’m also looking forward to seeing all the acts, as I’m a huge fan of Soul and R&B music.

“These genres have influenced and inspired elements of my highlife sound. So for me, it will be a huge pleasure to see all great acts perform,” the 32-year-old said.

Flavour, whose song Nwa Baby catapulted him into the spotlight said: “This show is a huge deal which requires all my energy, so all my plans centre on delivering a spectacular live performance.”
