IN THE heart of the CBD at the Mandela Rhodes Hotel apartment block on the corner of Church Street and St George’s Mall, Doppio Zero offers a wide range of home-style meals. The contemporary cafe chain also serves gourmet pizzas, Mediterranean dishes and artisan breads.
It’s up to you whether you want to enjoy the fare inside the restaurant while listening to contemporary music or outside while enjoying the view of the stores and people on the mall. The staff know how to engage with customers to help them feel at home, which was a great plus for me because I hate eating alone.
Seated at a cosy corner table with a view of just about the whole restaurant, pizza oven right in front of me and the buffet set up next to me, I forgot that I had come alone.
The people buzzing in, dashing for the buffet which seemed to be the popular breakfast choice, also kept my interests piqued.
Though they offer a set Doppio Classic breakfast menu, they also offer an all-you- can eat buffet for R140, which is served from 6am to 10.30am. I, too, opted for the buffet.
I grabbed a fruit salad which was mainly apples, kiwi and melons, just to ease into the massive range of foods available on the table.
The breakfast offers a range of fruits, cereals and some warm breakfast options. On the menu they have grilled tomatoes, mushrooms, beef and pork sausages, bacon, baked beans, mini cheesy omelettes and tramezzini. Though the beef sausage was a bit hard, it was tasty and the rest of the food was prepared to perfection.The fresh juice which went with my high carb breakfast was a soothing way to complete the morning.
