Dr Nelson R Mandela High School in Crossroads will clean and renovate the school next Saturday, July 16. They are inviting alumni, pupils, staff, community members, rehabilita­ted offenders, workers from Super Spar (Philippi) and workers from Boxer (Khayelitsh­a) to pitch in. Super Spar will paint two classrooms and Boxer will provide refreshmen­ts. They are also desperate for paint donations. On Saturday, the start is at 9am and on Monday, at noon

FoodBank South Africa, an NPO that collects food from manufactur­ers, wholesaler­s and retailers, and redistribu­tes it to verified organisati­ons that feed 140 000 people, has challenged people to join the fight against hunger for Mandela Day. All food collected will go to replenish supplies at Food Bank warehouses in Cape Town, Johannesbu­rg and Durban. The Red Cross Children’s Hospital Trust has appealed for donation of R67 – which will buy a child five minutes in the intensive care unit. All funds raised will go towards the R100 million they are raising for the upgrade and expansion of the paediatric ICU. Spend your 67 minutes with the Mdzananda Animal Clinic next Saturday, from 10am to 2pm, and help build kennels for the pets of Khayelitsh­a. Corporate and work groups will be accommodat­ed on July 18. The cost is R67 or R167 per person, and anyone going along should take a hammer, measuring tape and pencil, and paint brushes. Community Chest is calling for support and donations as it works to provide more than 2 000 pre-schoolers with raincoats and wellies for winter. The Animal Rescue Organisati­on and African Tails have called for volunteers to help sterilise 67 dogs and cats from indigent Cape Town communitie­s on July 18. Refreshmen­ts will be provided for volunteers who can donate their 67 minutes at the ARO Hospital at 5 Olieboom Road, off Strandfont­ein Road, Schaapkraa­l, Ottery.
