You will be fond of these fondues at One&Only
WINTER is simply the best; specials abound, even at the One&Only Cape Town which has a great offer that is quite affordable.
From now until the end of September, noon to 4pm daily, you can enjoy fondues at a luxurious venue without wrecking your wallet. Plus you get to do it in a location previously not open to non-guests at the resort.
The poolside restaurant Isola (which means island) is a tranquil little oasis, with outside seating for those warm days of which we get so many, and gas heaters inside for when it’s chilly. The limited edition fondue menu includes three savoury options and one sweet, and all of them include drinks. They are designed to be shared between two people and the portions are generous.
The meat fondue is a platter of kudu and beef fillets, chicken, lamb koftas (minced lamb), and slices of kudu sausage. You cook your morsels in sizzling oil, which is replaced frequently, and then dip them in either a rich tomato sauce, or a delicious mustard and cheese sauce. Two glasses of the jolly fine Meerlust pinot noir are served with this, and the whole lot costs R275 (for two people). Along with the selection of breads served to the table, this can go a long way and is quite filling.
The vegetarian fondue is R145 for two with two craft beers, and the seafood one is pricier obviously, at R385 for two, with two glasses of Meerlust chardonnay. My inside source informed me what these wines normally cost by the glass in Reuben’s and trust me, this is brilliant value for money.
It’s impossible not to end with the Swiss chocolate fondue – or have it on its own as an afternoon treat – which is a huge bowl of melted chocolate with marshmallows, churros, strawberries, nougat, brownies, and biscotti to dip. Ask for a spoon for the rest of the chocolate. The R155 price tag includes two glasses of Amarula. It’s delightfully decadent on a cold day. If you can handle more, sip a Spiced Dark or Caramel White hot chocolate drink served with cinnamon churros (R60).
