‘I Love You’ well worth another watch

worked closely with the creative team behind this production. Direction is by Elizma Badenhorst. The Johannesburg theatre maker lectures at the Oakfields College Faculty of Dance and Musical Theatre in Pretoria – similar to the Waterfront Theatre School.

Design is by Niall Griffin who with the cast. In addition to Griffin, the cast featured Candice van Litsenborgh, Shannyn Fourie and Roland Perold. However, I loved the show so much I saw it twice and now look forward to seeing it a third time.

The original cast wasn’t available for this run. Van Litsenborgh – who stole the show – is in rehearsal for Annie. Recently in Sweeney Todd, Van Litsenborgh is at Alexander Upstairs tonight at 9pm in the superb drama, Court.

I Love You is about the travails of finding – or not finding – a mate: the joy, anguish and heartache that comes with the territory. It’s funny, self-deprecating; elegiac and wistful.

More than 52 characters of all ages are depicted. The use of clothes is ingenious: how we project and present ourselves and conceal and reveal aspects of our characters.

Griffin says that he has brought a fresh take to his design for this production, a “pop-art inspired set and wardrobe”.

Tickets are R125-R250 at Computicket or the theatre on 021 438 3301.
