Talks on SA ter­ror

DE­SPITE there be­ing no real threat in South Africa, Pre­to­ria and Joburg have been iden­ti­fied as the cities with the high­est num­ber of ter­ror­ism alarms.

“In South Africa, Gaut­eng, and specif­i­cally Joburg and Pre­to­ria, lead the way of num­ber of ter­ror­ists al­le­ga­tions,” said Martin Ewi, who is at­tached to the Transna­tional Threats and In­ter­na­tional Crime di­vi­sion of the In­sti­tute for Se­cu­rity Stud­ies (ISS).

Ewi was speak­ing dur­ing the sem­i­nar Vi­o­lent Ex­trem­ism: how safe is South Africa?, hosted by the ISS in Pre­to­ria yes­ter­day.

He said it was pos­si­ble for South Africa to deal with ter­ror threats by con­duct­ing broad re­search on the sub­ject and im­prov­ing the in­ter­nal co-or­di­na­tion and com­mu­ni­ca­tion of counter-ter­ror­ism ac­tiv­i­ties.
