WPCC, Maties gear up for a top-of-the table clash

- ALLAN ISAACS

THE final game of the league format sees WPCC host current triple champions, Maties in a mouth-watering encounter at Ave De Mist at 3pm today.

WPCC are currently seven points clear and have remained unbeaten in the campaign and only dropped points in a 3-3 first-round draw against Maties.

Maties were lucky to share the spoils in that game and equalised with seconds left on the clock. They suffered their first loss in four years against the impressive Central outfit in June and uncharacteristically drew games to UCT and Central in the first round.

On the evidence of Maties’ last five unbeaten games they are peaking at the right time.

Andrew Hobson is the only player missing due to a family commitment.

Dylan Swanepoel, Dan Bell, Shannon Boucher and Keenan Horne are the seasoned players the Maties will rely on.

All four have represented their country and they are also playing in their last season for Maties and will be looking to go out on a high.

WPCC have blended youth with experience and have been the best team in the league. Their coach, James Peverley, has done a fantastic job in gelling the team and his generals in Wade Paton, Callum Buchanan, Lloyd Norris-Turner and Mark Turner have been sublime this season.

In the curtain- raiser at 1.30pm, WPCC women’s team will host the unbeaten Maties women’s team. Men’s Grand Challenge Central v Langa, WPCC v Maties, Pinelands v Vics, Fish Hoek v UCT. Women’s Grand Challenge Central v Somerset West, WPCC v Maties, Pinelands v Vics, Conberg v UCT.
