Soma celebrates individuality and creativity through dance
BELLY dancing is a wonderful way to appreciate the feminine form – yours or someone else’s. Committed to the growth and development of each student’s unique creative voice through the vehicle of belly dance, Soma fusion belly dance company, the first tribal fusion and American tribal style studio in South Africa, is celebrating 10 years of teaching and performing.
It is Soma’s belief that dance is a universal language and cannot be exclusionary and it therefore welcomes all levels of experience, all fitness levels, all body shapes and all ages (and genders) to join this community of women who celebrate their individuality and creativity through dance. Find out more at tonight’s anniversary show at the Nassau Theatre.
It will showcase students, performance troupe members and teachers all performing a variety of dances, drum solos and pot balancing acts. There will also be guest performances by two other dance schools. Musically, mixed genre, electronic and ancient percussive rhythms are used to create a dynamic tapestry for movement and expression. From traditional north African Ghawazee tribal dance through all things fantastical, Soma offers a spirited repertoire combined with cleverly crafted choreography and a bevy of Bedouin beauties to boot.
The show is 90 minutes with a short interval during which guests can browse the tribal fusion jewellery on sale in the foyer. Doors open at 7.30pm and the show begins promptly at 8pm. A fundraising raffle will be part of the event. All profits from this raffle will go towards funding international belly dance workshops for two of Soma’s dancers. Raffle tickets are R50 and winners will be announced at the show.
Tickets are R100 through Quicket (http://qkt.io/Soma10Year). For more information go to www.soma.co.za
