Help illustrate city author’s new book

LAUREN BEUKES is a wellknown author who lives in Cape Town. She is writing a children’s book called Bostik Book of Unbelievable Beasties.

Funny things such as breakdancing dinosaurs, carrot juiceslurping vampire bunnies or octodragon moose are just three of the 20 beastly creatures readers will meet in the land of Unbelievia.

But there is something missing from the book – pictures of these weird creatures. That’s where the kids who are learning to read with Shine Literacy, as well as all other children across South Africa, have a role to play. Lauren wants kids to help bring her beasties to life by providing the pictures to illustrate her book of rhymes.

Grade 2 pupils from the Shine Centre at Prestwich Street Primary School in Green Point were very keen to help. Last week they had a fun morning using crayons, scissors, shapes and glue to create some weird and wonderful creatures inspired by the rhymes.

If you are aged between 6 and 12, you can also help make the book.

Ask your parents or a teacher to download an entry form from the Bostik website www.bostik.co.za/ crafts/ unbelievable- beasties/ create- your- beastie and read the rhyme describing one of the 20 beasties. Then create the creature described in the rhyme. You can cut out one of the images provided on the site and decorate it, or make your own version of the beastie. Entries can be scanned and emailed to beasties@bostik.co.za. Entry forms are also available at all Col’Cacchio pizzerias. The competition closes on August 20 and the draw will take place next month. The best beasties will appear in Lauren’s book in October. The kids who did the illustrations will receive a copy of the book, signed by the author. The rest of the books will be donated to Shine Centres. The book will be available as a free ebook on the Bostik website. ● For more information, visit www.bostik.co.za or their Facebook page.
