Nimble Swift is a dream to drive

- NONI MOKATI

ACAR that is overlooked and grossly under-appreciated – this is my view of the 1.4 Suzuki Swift GLS MT.

We are quick to opt for the tried and tested brands, hence I was initially sceptical about the Swift.

The name on its own didn’t inspire much confidence and I was left with a list of questions.

After driving the peppy fourcylinder, I realised my first impression that the car was a timid beast was wide of the mark.

I had the opportunity to drive it over a couple of rainy days three weeks ago and the Suzuki held its own.

The car passed its first test for agility with flying colours while winding down the scenic Munro Drive in Houghton.

This was thanks to its 16-inch aluminium alloy wheels, which gave it superior grip, and the reassuring ABS brakes.

The front fog lamps and halogen multi-reflector lights were great for the dark route at night.

The power steering was a dream and I especially loved the leather touch of the steering wheel.

The interior, which is of utmost importance to me, did not disappoint.

The dark finishes meant I was left embarrassed by my child’s shoe stains and glitter from her Barbie doll clothes. This was easily wiped clean.

Like cellphones, cars have improved with time and continue to do so. No longer am I comfortable driving a car that does not boast a USB port, built-in Bluetooth and cruise control – the Swift had them all.

Also impressive is the keyless entry. It came as a pleasant surprise not to have to worry about placing the key in the ignition.

Many may be under the impression the Swift has no chance in a dice against a rival such as the Ford Fiesta. Think again, mate. The Swift is a show-off when it comes to speed. I found myself giving a BMW a go for its money.

Although I didn’t win, it was comforting to know that the Swift doesn’t drive at a snail’s pace.

But while all these amazing features had me thrilled, I was left disappointed by the car’s pint-sized boot space.

There is not enough room for groceries or a large gym bag.

This renders the hatch more suitable for the young, single or a college student, but less so for a family.

You may also want to keep your drinks limited as there are only two bottle- or cup-holder spaces.

You can be assured, however, that you will save money on the gas.

After two weeks behind the wheel, I still had a considerable amount of fuel left, a saving I will never match with my current car.

Since I stand just 1.48m tall, I absolutely adored the seat adjuster, which came in handy.

With Suzuki, Swift does not exist as just a name. The car is nimble and will get you comfortably and swiftly to your destination. At R212 900, the Swift is a gift. If it wasn’t for the size of the boot, I would be making plans to trade in my current car.
